The Zambia Police Service has reinstated security checkpoints in order to address the increasing challenges presented by criminal activities.
Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga emphasized in a statement that the implementation of security checkpoints would further enhance public safety.
He mentioned that Lusaka would be equipped with 4 checkpoints, while the Copperbelt Province would have 8, Central Province would have 7, Luapula Province would have 4, North Western Province would have 2, Eastern Province would have 2, Western Province would have 3, Northern Province would have 3, Muchinga Province would have 4, and Southern Province would have 3 checkpoints.
Hamoonga also mentioned that the security personnel stationed at the checkpoints will exclusively consist of officers from the Criminal Investigations department and uniformed officers.
He further mentioned that traffic officers will be actively patrolling the roads, both on motorized vehicles and on foot, in order to ensure that motorists who violate the rules are held accountable. This approach differs from their previous practice of remaining stationary at security checkpoints.
