A Legacy of Pride: Gen Barry’s Remarkable Journey

Colin Barry, the former Commander of the Zambia Air Force (ZAF), expressed his confidence in the institution’s current leadership, stating that it is in capable hands. As he bids farewell, he leaves the ZAF with a deep sense of gratitude and pride for the accomplishments achieved during his tenure.

Lieutenant General Barry, the twelfth ZAF commander of indigenous descent, assumed his position on August 30, 2021, and served until December 20, 2023. At that point, his deputy, Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, succeeded him as the new commander of the ZAF.

On Wednesday, a grand fly-in fly-out parade took place at the ZAF headquarters in Lusaka, marking the symbolic transfer of leadership from one commander to the next. This ceremonial event serves as a significant milestone in the military hierarchy, signifying the passing of the leadership mantle. The parade was meticulously organized, with aircraft flying in and out of the headquarters, creating a captivating spectacle. It was a momentous occasion that showcased the seamless transition of power within the ZAF, highlighting the commitment and professionalism of its commanders.

The occasion, following military tradition, was filled with a grand display of pageantry and splendor.

Prior to the commencement of any speeches, a customary salute was given by the individuals participating in the parade. General Barry, being the esteemed guest, took the opportunity to inspect the parade while mounted on his horse. The parade then proceeded to march past in both slow and quick time, showcasing their synchronized movements and precision. Finally, the audience had the privilege of hearing the detailed account of General Barry’s impressive curriculum vitae (CV), highlighting his notable achievements and experiences.

Additional tasks carried out during the event encompassed the formal signing of the commander’s transfer of authority document, the exchange of the takeover book, the symbolic transfer of leadership instruments, and the bestowing of gifts to General Barry. In his address, General Barry expressed his gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema for the faith and assurance placed in him when he was selected to assume the leadership role of the Zambian Air Force.

He expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve both the Zambia Air Force and the people of Zambia, acknowledging it as a tremendous privilege. In addition, he extended his heartfelt appreciation to the President, addressing him respectfully as “Mr. President, Sir,” and concluded by offering his well wishes for the President’s leadership, accompanied by a prayer for God’s blessings upon him and his endeavors.
